The TVA lesson

The June 26-27 BDN told us how Kay Phaneuf, 53, died after National Grid shut off the electric to her oxygen machine. She hadn’t paid her bill. The Boston Globe mentions she was a grandmother, cancer survivor and went to St. Joseph’s parish in Salem, N.H.
The Columbia Missourian reported that 30-year-old Nathan Graham Curry died of hypothermia in his home on Dec. 4, 2009, after his power had been shut off in September.
Michigan Welfare Rights representatives claim 18 people died last winter in Detroit because of DTE Energy shut-offs.

Some people might wonder about our nation. Not I. Jesus tells us we’re offspring of vipers in Matthew 12:34. So what’s that electric guitar distortion pedal shiver when we hear the first illegal fireworks on the Fourth? Could there be fine fruit too?

On MPBN, Libby Mitchell said: “We have entrepreneurs in Maine who are struggling to start photovoltaic and geothermal industries. The high cost of energy is one of the biggest barriers to businesses.”

It appears having lived in the South, Libby learned the lesson of the federally owned Tennessee Valley Authority which bea.gov says added an estimated $3 billion into the federal budget receipts in the first quarter of 2009, producing inexpensive electricity for 9 million people in seven southeastern states.

Tva.gov says its industrial rates in 2008 were 16 percent lower than the U.S. retail average, commercial rates 9 percent lower and residential rates 20 percent lower. Hit the juice.

Dear Bangor Daily News:

The late actor Jack Lord was born 22 days before the World Almanac says Republicans acquired Congress and the presidency from 1921 to 1933.

Ntu.org says Republicans lowered the top marginal tax rate in stages from 73% in 1921 to 24% in 1929, the year we first shattered the world economy.

Democrats raised it to 92% in 1952 and 1953, the years bls.gov says unemployment fell to 3.0% and 2.9%.
It stayed at 91% from 1954 through 1963 while unemployment averaged 5.4% / year, nyse.tv says the Dow grew 17.2% / year and treasurydirect.gov says national debt rose 1.27% / year.

Except spiking 1968 - 1970 (Apollo 11 launched 7/16/69), it was lowered by Democrats to 70% between 1964 - 1980, while unemployment averaged 5.5% / year, the Dow rose 2.6% / year, and national debt rose 11.2% / year.

Republicans lowered the top rate in stages to 28% between 1981 - 1990 (Kristen Shepard shot J.R.), while unemployment averaged 7.1% / year, the Dow rose 17.1% / year and national debt rose 22.4% / year.

Between 1991 - 2000 it was raised twice (Gap blue desses weren't cheap) to 39.6%, while unemployment averaged 5.6% / year, the Dow rose 31.3% / year and national debt rose 5.48% / year.

Between 2001 - 2010 (Matt Murphy snagged Barry Bond's 756th HR ball 8/7/07) Republicans lowered it in stages to 35% while unemployment averaged 6.1% / year, the Dow rose 0.87% / year and national debt rose 13.3% / year.

Dear Bangor Daily News:
Here is my math for the average unemployment, Dow and national debt figures, for the letter I'm about to send.
Merriam - Webster's says says a hyphen (-) between two dates means up to and including.
You can get 12 digit calculators at Family dollar for $5.
National Debt is for nominal (actual at the time?) dollars. Davemanuel.com shows national debt from 1791 - 2010 in both nominal and 2010 "real" dollars.
Funk & Wagnalls says to find a percentage relationship of one number (4) and another (16), divide the former by the latter and multiply by 100:
4 divided by 16 = 0.25 x 100 = 25% (4 is 25 percent of 16).
